WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Department of Agricultural Economics at Purdue University, in collaboration with Microsoft, created the Purdue Food and Agriculture Vulnerability Index online dashboard to quantify the potential risk to the supply of agricultural products due to COVID-19 diseases of agricultural and agricultural workers.

The vulnerability of the supply of an agricultural product to risks such as COVID-19 depends on the number of farmers and agricultural workers affected, the location of the affected workers, the crops and animals growing in the most affected areas. most affected and the degree of production concentrated in a particular geographic region.

The online Purdue Food and Agricultural Vulnerability Index dashboard, built on Microsoft Azure and Power BI platforms, estimates the share of agricultural production at risk by combining The data on the number of COVID cases in each US county with the county total population, United States Department of Agriculture The data the number of farmers and farm workers hired in each county, and The data on the agricultural production of each department.

“One of the things we’ve learned over the past few weeks is how important it is to know where our food is coming from and to be able to identify and identify potential problem spots. This tool was designed to help us detect if and when a problem arises, ”said Jayson L. Lusk, distinguished professor and head of the agricultural economics department at Purdue and index contributor.

Ranveer Chandra, Chief Scientist at Microsoft Azure Global and Senior Project Contributor, said: “Digital tools can help alleviate some of the stresses we currently face in the food industry. We’re working with Purdue University to interpret data from different sources and multiple points in the supply chain, to add more visibility and identify potential risks to our food system.

The online dashboard is free and allows the user to explore by product and estimate the potential risks of loss of production and productivity due to COVID-19 diseases of farmers and agricultural workers at the level of the State and county.
